However, if you are drawn to pursue a brave, wildly successful life where you set sail for one horizon after another, then you are going to want to surround yourself with a crew of people who hunger and thirst for adventure too.

Here are 10 ways to spot a fellow pirate in 2026:

#1. It’s the glint of magic in their eyes, the reflection of the horizon, an echo of their dreams. There is always something they are pursuing and an adventure they’ll never forget.

#2. When they don’t agree with something, they will tell you. They might be polite, or they might strike you with a blunt sword, but they will never be ambiguous.

#3. They will talk more about the future than they talk about the past. Old adventures are remembered, but new adventures will be whispered on the daily.

#4. You’ll be shocked by their ambition; they won’t be thinking small and qualifying their success in gentle ways. The horizon is wide, and they are charging towards it.

#5. You’ll feel excited and energised when you are around them.

#6. They will struggle to play by the rules and respect the norms. They don’t like dry land, being chained to a desk, or the white picket fence.

#7. There is an almost foolish openness to the pirate’s heart. Within 3 seconds, you’ll know how they are feeling in any particular moment.

#8. They will have failed a lot, and painful though it is, it cannot stop them from pursuing more adventure.

#9. Mischief. They will tease, mock, and joke around a lot. A good pirate does not sulk in his bunk for long.

#10. Loyalty. They’ll always have your back when you are on the ship, because your thirst for adventure makes you like “blood” to them.

The Modern Day Pirates Breath Method

Social media doesn’t have to be driven by anxiety.

It doesn’t need to be demonized.

It doesn’t have to be avoided at all costs.

It can simply become a natural, normal extension of yourself.

For the sake of this post, let’s consider the social media space to be a big, wide, and sometimes wild ocean.

Yes, there are sharks in the ocean.

Yes, there are storms.

Yes, there are pirates whose intentions are selfish.

And yet none of this makes the ocean bad... It simply means the ocean is real.

Knowing how to navigate this water is critical for anyone who dares to believe that somewhere beyond the horizon is a better life for them.

Every extraordinary voyage begins by leaving the shore.

And every healthy breath begins with an inhale.

That brings us to the first half of the Modern Day Pirate Breath Method.

Breathe In: Curiosity

A Modern Day Pirate doesn’t begin by asking,

“What should I post today?”

They begin by asking,

“What am I genuinely curious about?”

Maybe it’s a question about parenting.

Maybe it’s about leadership.

Or perhaps it’s about fitness.

Or it could be about AI.

Maybe it’s why some people seem to build extraordinary friendships while others remain lonely.

So they ask.

Not to manufacture engagement.

But because they genuinely want to understand.

Suddenly, something remarkable happens.

One question becomes a conversation.

One conversation becomes fifty different perspectives.

People from around the world begin sharing their stories, experiences, and opinions.

You aren’t shouting into the ocean anymore.

You’re exploring it.

Every answer is another island.

Every conversation is another piece of treasure.

Breathe Out: Voice

Eventually, you have to stop listening.

You have to stop gathering.

You cannot simply collect the opinions of others and expect people to truly resonate with who you are.

This is, after all, a conversation.

So you have to speak.

Not loudly, but honestly.

Your truth.

This is where most people get stuck.

They’ve inhaled thousands of ideas...

But they’ve never taken the time to discover...

• What do I actually believe?

• How do I feel about this?

• What’s my story in regard to this topic?

A Modern Day Pirate doesn’t simply repost information.

You connect ideas.

You tell stories.

You challenge assumptions.

You use your own voice.

You help other people find their way across the wild ocean.

You share the unique way you’ve come to understand the world through your own conversations, adventures, and experiences.

I had mine.

I still do.

And yet for a while I forgot myself, the stressors of this world, the opinions of others, fell upon me like thick mist, and I couldn’t see the horizon anymore.

And yet, just because you cannot see your dreams anymore, just because you cannot feel them, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

You’re just caught up in the mist.

Hoist a sail and set your bearings to True North, plough through the ocean, and you will find your dreams again.

Clawing at the surface of the pool, I was surely about to drown.

He was in an expensive Wall Street-style suit; he threw himself into the icy water and lifted my small body out of the pool.

He saved my life.

His name was Graham, and I have never seen him since.

Moments in life.

When we have the sacred opportunity to really see each other and make a difference.

They are not always dramatic, but they always matter.

And, oh, how he damn tried…

He used all the foolproof regular pirate tricks that his uncle, the Great Pirate Jim, had taught him.

He drank a whole bottle of gin in one breath right in front of her.

He told her filthy tales of his many great and sordid adventures across the ocean.

He farted loudly for a full 15 clicks of his pirate clock.

He even danced a jig with Scruff, the ship’s one-eyed pirate dog.

But the beautiful damsel barely cast her mysterious green eyes upon him.

He threw himself, frustrated, into his bunk in the ship’s hold as the next pirate took his turn.

That pirate also:

• Drank a whole bottle of gin.

• Told outrageous and fictitious tales.

• Farted until his wind filled the ship’s sails.

• Danced a jig with poor old Scruff.

And so the pattern continued…

In trying to be the most performative, the most pirate, the most of everything…

No pirate stood out.

None was memorable.

None turned the head of the pretty passenger.

Sometimes, trying harder, putting in more hours, and fighting for more scant attention is just about the worst thing you can do.

For the Modern Day Pirate (the solopreneur), the key to success is simple:

How do you become someone who is impossible to forget?

Both online and offline.

The keys are certainly not found in:

• Copying the strategies of others.

• Running copious ads.

• Pumping out a huge amount of AI-created content.

You’ll just be another pirate telling filthy yarns, trying to get the attention of a pretty girl.

I’ve been there.

I’ve done this.

And the way to success is not through muscle and hustle.

The pirate who won the damsel was a sensitive young soul who could never really ride with the mob.

The gin hurt his belly.

He could not fart to save his life.

He had no tales to tell.

And he refused to dance with a dog in the presence of such a fine lady.

So he bought her his last remaining flower from dry land.

He smiled at her shyly.

And he played her a tune on his harmonica when she was feeling sad.

In a world of brouhaha, he went deep when the other pirates clamoured after the loud and superficial.

In a world of artificial, he went fully human and completely natural.

That’s how you will truly become a person who is impossible to forget in 2026…

Through your story.

By leveraging kindness.

When you truly connect and see others.

It’s a beautiful world (still), and an impossibly good life is more available to you than ever.

The answer is to step more fully into being you.

Online.

Offline.

On pirate ships.

Everywhere.

It’s Monday morning.

I’m writing this on my phone as I walk through the hills of rural New Zealand.

It’s beautiful here.

Everything is green.

The sun is trying to break through fluffy white clouds.

But if I’m honest…

I’m struggling to feel it.

The Truth About Our Lives

Sometimes we think that being fully alive, pumped up, excited, and feeling like you own your life, is something that happens after everything works out.

After we hit those big income goals.

After we lose the weight.

After we find that very special relationship.

After our dreams finally come true.

But this morning, as I walk, I’m reminded that whenever I think that way, this pirate has got it all f*cking backwards.

The secret to a full life isn’t waiting until life gets better.

It’s giving yourself permission to become fully alive now.

Now in the struggle.

Now in the uncertainty.

Now in the hills.

Now in the adventure.

It’s that permission, that strong human decision that transforms your mind and turns “what you thought was a struggle” into the life of adventure that you’ve always wanted.

The Things That Steal the Wind

Somewhere along the way, many of us were talked out of our deepest desires.

We were told they were foolish.

People rolled their eyes when we shared our dreams.

We were tricked into believing they were unrealistic.

Someone told us a life at sea was dangerous, as if a little danger was a bad thing.

Or perhaps life simply got busy…

…and we stopped listening.

Our desires never disappeared.

We just tuned them out.

So let me ask you something.

He wanted a much better life but he refused to wake up from his slumber…

He was the sleeping pirate…

Shackled to his bunk by an unfortunate lack of ambition

Always sleeping.

Never dreaming.

Never rising early enough to capture the beauty of the golden sun coming up out of the deep blue sea.

Often bitter and usually drunk, when they divided up the treasure and he got the smallest share.”

It was not fair.

He was the oldest on the ship.

He knew more about the ocean.

He never hoisted the sails though and he never kept watch late at night when the sea was rough and the monsters from Davy Jones had escaped and were looking for easy prey.

No. He was down below shackled to his bunk, making love to his pillow.

For although he was always sleeping, he had long forgotten the thrill of it all.

He didn’t dream anymore.

He didn’t thirst for the open sea.

He did not long to stand on the bow of the ship and feel the chill of the icy wind ripping through his thick pirate beard.

He wanted the treasure but did not hunger for the adventure.

Dad, can I have an ice cream?”

“No.” Stern as hell! “Because you asked, I am not giving you one!”

Me, as a child also stubborn as hell. “But I want an ice cream, Dad?”

“No. You need to wait until it is offered.”

He was a hard bastard, but I loved him so. Still, this notion of “not asking for what you want” sunk its claw way deep inside of me.”

For a while, I started to believe that wanting was wrong…

We all have different parents, but in my experience, nearly all of us have a claw that wages against our deepest desires.

An implanted voice that tries to teach us:

That chasing after desire is inherently immoral.

That you should wait and see what life offers you.

In 2016, I ripped that claw out when my father passed away, and I began the process of rejecting every ill-founded belief that waged a war against desire.

It’s not wrong to want more.

It’s a wonderful thing to grab hold of your own life and to look at the years that you’ve given and to say…

Let me make the most of every single second of living.

Let me desire the fullest, richest, and most passion-filled life possible.

Let me chase “aliveness” in every single dimension of my human life.

Let me want…

This is not about living an undisciplined life.

In my years of coaching, I have always found that it is the lack of desire that leads to unbreakable apathy and indiscipline.

Which brings me to this post today, and me boldly telling you about what I have built and what I want to see happen.

I am building a movement.

I believe there are thousands of Modern-Day Pirates hiding in plain sight.

A Modern Day Pirate is a person brave enough to say yes to desire…

That is the only requirement. Do you agree with most of these statements?
