Loyalty is a really misunderstood and misused concept right now.

The problem with a misplaced idea around loyalty is that it steals your freedom. It takes away your ability to make choices. It suppresses you, keeps you tight and tense, and has you clinging to something that was only ever meant to serve you for a season.

If I’m hitting something with a hammer, a tight closed fist is useful. But if I want to eat my lunch, I’ve got to let go of that hammer. Holding on doesn’t serve me anymore.

Where I see this most? Relationships. The workplace. Leadership dynamics. People stay loyal to someone who once inspired them — even when that person now limits them. They believe that loyalty is the “right” thing. But that version of loyalty will keep you from your dreams. Every time.

Because people will let you down. They’ll change. They’ll shift you away from your values if you’re not careful. But your values? Your calling? That’s where your loyalty should lie.

Some of you have big, beautiful ideas. A business you want to start. A book you want to write. A bold move that lives in your heart. But you don’t share it — because someone in your life won’t understand. You tell yourself they’ll be disappointed or upset if you change jobs, or move cities, or pursue something risky.

Here’s the truth: you never save a relationship by sacrificing your dream. What you do instead is kill the dream and the relationship slowly. And painfully.

You’ve got to be surrounded by people who say YES. Yes to you being fully yourself. Yes to your goals. Yes to your energy and ambition. If you’ve got people in your life who make you hesitate before speaking your dreams out loud — that’s your signal.

It doesn’t mean you need a dramatic break. You don’t have to make a speech and cut people off. You just stop giving so much weight to the people who shrink you, and start giving more time to the people who expand you.

Find three people who believe in you. Write their names down. Share your dream with them this week. Just those three.

Don’t talk to the toxic one. Don’t try to convince the skeptic. Pour into the people who support you.

Here’s the thing: the answer to pollution is dilution. You don’t need to pluck every drop of negativity from your life. Just drown it out with more of the good stuff — more of the right people.

You deserve a life full of momentum. Of courage. Of trying things. Of finding out what you’re made of. You deserve to be surrounded by people who make you feel more alive — not less.

The paradox of this truth:
