I couldn’t even beat my 8-year-old daughter in a running race.

You get the picture.

I wasn’t healthy.

So after some serious soul-searching, I set what became my first and most famous 3-Word Goal:

Fittest at Fifty.

I decided I was going to become the fittest, strongest, fastest, and healthiest I’d ever been by the time I turned 50.

People laughed.

Even my own son said,

“Dad... it can’t be done.”

So I did it anyway.

And then now, today, I’ve set an even crazier goal…

This one is not about fitness

It’s not about me

It’s about impact

I want to build something that outlives me.

This 3-Word Goal is far more outlandish than Fittest at 50.

I almost shivered as I spoke my goal out loud to a couple of people on our Zoom Call this morning.

Because this time, I am not trying to transform just one life.

I’m going to build something more beautiful…

“Thousand Member Movement”

And it will be.

Because I already see it.

One thousand amazing people chasing really big dreams.

Refusing to settle for a smaller life than they deserve.

One thousand people using my methods, my models, and my tools to actively and practically build the lives they truly want.

One conversation.

One goal.

One life at a time.

Don’t tell me it’s impossible. Please don’t try to protect me from a dream that scares you.

Instead, do something else.

It’s the reason he taught me to swim.

It happened years before I was born.

Sometime in the 1960’s, he and my newly married mom were walking the golden sand beach of Whangamatā, in the Coromandel in New Zealand.

It was not summer; it was a lazy Sunday afternoon in the middle of winter.

The beach was isolated

Two people, an elderly couple, emerged from the dunes and sauntered down to the beach, a little drunk on wine, thinking that today was the perfect day for a swim.

To want someone?

It’s called a broken heart for a reason, AND this is my hypothesis...

When a human heart breaks, we don’t just lose the relationship...

We lose something else too? I’ll get to this; keep reading.

When a heart breaks, a human being learns that desire is dangerous, and wanting too much can end in a form of cruelty.

This is why you set modest goals...

Because hope deferred makes the heart sick...

Because at your core, you are afraid of what it might mean to truly believe and to deeply want.

So goals become objects and life becomes a series of targets.

It’s a lifeless kind of mendacity

This is also why you fail more often than you should...

Because you and I are not living from a place of deep desire.

It sucks.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Desire still lives inside of you.

He is an insurance salesman with a great sense of humor and cerebral palsy.

He had a specific problem, perhaps you can relate.

He would get excited and set goals, only to find that one week later, he had gotten so busy and distracted with life that none of his goals seemed possible anymore.

He was pretty low when we talked over Messenger, and he was at least one bottle of Jack Daniel’s in.

Then he said the words that so many people only ever think.

“I wonder if I should quit my dreams and just accept my lot in life.”

However...

However…

I never, ever let any of my friends play small with their lives.

And so Chris and I distilled his “missing his goals” problem into 3 distinct areas:

One: His goals were too easy to forget. They were long-winded, complicated, and not easy to remember.

Together, we crafted some powerful 3-word goals that were measurable and short. His physical goal is “Win Powerlifting Champs.” He’s as strong as an ox; I know he will do it.

Two: He had no system to keep him connected to his goals. So they felt good at first, and then they became less and less attractive.

So we made his goals visual. Used our AI tool to create an image of him, wheels up, on top of the powerlifting podium with a bit of gold tin hanging around his neck. Now he was visually seeing his goals on a daily basis.

Three: He was on his own with them. He had not told a soul. I guess this way, if he failed there would be no embarrassment.

So while he finished another glass of JD’s, we created his team of CoCreators, people who would keep him honest and who would also practically help him reach his goals…

Chris is charging now; he’s got powerful goals, ways of staying connected to them no matter how complicated or shitty life gets, and he has a team of good friends spurring him on.

He is destined to succeed.

Was it Mom or Dad?

Someone in your life taught you to “not want” too much.

A lack of ambition kills souls. People are stuck in the doldrums of life, and they are afraid to even hoist a sail because they believe that any trace of wind is bad.

But the wind is actually good.

And a life in motion is a very attractive thing; it grows businesses, can heal relationships, and might even inspire other people to greatness.

Consistent wind is important.

Not loads of energy one day and nothing the rest... Always in motion, always towards your goals.

And this doesn’t often happen. So many people start strong and then slow down or stop. There’s a reason for this.

The Good Wind Doesn’t Blow on Silent Ships

It’s easy to dream a little bit, or want only a little more.

I think someone taught us wrong when we were kids.

• They told us to be grateful for what we have.

• They reminded us that we have so much more than other people in our world.

All of this is true, but I know that I personally picked up something else in their teaching. Something that was altogether detrimental to me.

• I learned to be circumspect in my wanting more.

• To want a little bit but not too much

• To know what my station was in life

Can you relate? Did you learn a similar lesson?

There’s a big problem with this. It means we’ve learned to ignore our own desires and to set mediocre and circumspect goals.

These goals are “realistic,” and as such, they don’t motivate us much, and they don’t drive us to change.

Great 3-Word Goals Are Born Out of Desire and Not Belief

When I set my very first 3-word goals two years ago, I was at rock bottom.

I could have set a physical goal of: “Exercise Thrice Weekly”

And yet there would be no ambition there, no end goal, no life-changing desire.

What was it that I really wanted, as I sat on that rock ‘3 Steps Away From Having a Coronary?”

• I was utterly sick of being unfit

• I was tired of being fat

• I was extremely frustrated at having wasted the best years of my life not exercising

When you hit rock bottom, you want radical change. You want the opposite of your current struggle.

Let me tell you what I truly desired. Perhaps there are latent desires inside of you just like too…

I wanted my wasted years back.

I’m getting teary-eyed just thinking about it now.

So I set a big, bold, impossible 3-word goal… “Fittest At Fifty”

I would take back all the wasted years. I would become the fittest, fastest, and strongest I’d ever been in my life by the age of 50.

The next day, I drove to the gym closest to my house and hired the first personal trainer that I met.

I thought about this 3-word-goal daily.

And two years later… I reached my goal.

How do you unleash desire when you set your goals?

It takes a certain level of bravery to believe in impossible things. Here are 3 things that help me:

1. I refuse to limit my goals

2. I try to choose goals that are almost embarrassing to say out loud.

3. When I find myself playing small, I double my goal.

It also helps to set goals while you are surrounded by other aspirational people, as they will both pull and push you to greatness

Sometimes, even in low moments, I catch a glimpse of the world that I am building, and it is very exciting.

It frees me from feeling tossed about by the wind and the storms.

I feel like I can plough through the tough stuff. I know where I am heading.

10 years from now, there is a version of you looking back at your present circumstances, exhorting you not to give in to mendacity and to always believe in more.

When you run towards the future you want, it will always race back towards you. I promise

It’s why I set extremely unrealistic 3-word goals.

The kinds of goals that people secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) laugh at when they hear them. Because all they can see is “me right now.”

But my future self, the very best version of me, says... “They might laugh, but I believe in you.”

A hopeful pirate dares to imagine a much better life for themselves and the people they love. Not because they are intrinsically better, but because they can hear the echo across the ocean of the future calling.

Smart people don’t drift; they set goals, especially in strange or difficult times!

I deleted the email and went for a walk.

5-minutes later I returned, absolutely convinced that success would be mine.

To anyone with a dream who is reading this:

When people doubt you

When others accuse you of being a dreamer.

When those who are afraid try and pull you back into living a normal, safe life…

Do not be discouraged. Do not waver in your pursuit.

Their criticism is evidence.

You are doing the right thing and this scares them so much.

Keep going. Always believe in yourself. Never stop.

Who am I?

It’s the big existential question…

I am not my circumstances, and you are not yours.

Think about it this way…

If you are struggling, you are not the struggle itself; you are a person who is pushing back against adversity.

If you are lonely, you are not loneliness itself; you are the person who still wishes to find love.

If you are financially broke, you are not destitute; you are a human being looking for a way to rise.

So, Who Am I?

Completely overweight. Very unfit. My heart felt like it was literally trying to jump out of my chest.

I was chasing after a dream that did not work out as I envisioned.

But I was on a great big adventure a gazillion miles from home.

I have no children.

I have not travelled the world.

I think that’s what we misunderstand about goals, ambition, and sometimes even the art of manifestation.

It’s all about becoming the person we are supposed to be, and only a very small amount of it is about achieving the actual goal.

Goals get us in motion.

They stop us from sinking into inertia, boredom, and becoming atrophied at a soul level.

They pump energy into our veins.

They fill us with optimism.

I’ve never been attracted to human beings who don’t have goals, AND I’ve always been drawn to people who dare to believe that the seemingly impossible might be... possible.

If you are feeling tired or stuck, then it’s time to set new goals, bigger ones, braver ones, ones that send you on a great big adventure.

The dog had piercing blue eyes that stared right into my soul.

The kind  of eyes that could see secrets.

I tried to chase him away because he scared me so.

And yet he was too loyal to run…

The dog is a metaphor for a true friend… the kind that sees what you are truly capable of.

The type that refuses to ever leave you.

Even in the sewers of life…

Their belief in you is unwavering, because they see the goodness in you, they know what you are truly capable of.

If you are reading this post, I want you to know that I see you…

Not in the sewers.

Nor in the challenges you truly face.

But the real you.

The real you who still has big impossible dreams, lost maybe, but still there, still wandering around, somewhere deep down inside you.

I’m calling you to your dreams today.

I am asking you to believe again.

Because it is only when we dare to reach for the stars do we fully become the human beings we were designed to be.

That brave, bold, unstoppable version of you still exists…

You don’t have to find your own way there.

The first step is to simply surround yourself with people who see you.

Who believe in you.

It was good for me

It helped me become strong.

I met some amazing people. I learned to care for others. Sometimes I miss it still.

A healthy community has never been more important, but the way we find it in 2026 might be quite different from the way it used to be.

Joining hands with people just because you happen to co-exist in the same neighbourhood, it is not a terrible idea, but is it the best idea?

Increasingly, people are looking for others who share more than just living in the same neighbourhood or believing in a similar God.

This might be controversial, but it only takes us so far…

Human beings thrive when they are surrounded by people with matching values and similiar goals…

We go further when we are surrounded by people who are actively in motion, and are running in the same race.

It’s why I am building my 300-member Conversation Collective.

It’s like church for a Solopreneur or a salesperson who is actively building their own thing.

People who want to grow their business but who also want to create a better world.

It’s cool to be surrounded by people who believe similarly and who take consistent action.

It’s inspiring.

It wakes me up.

It helps me believe again in everything good.

We need each other. Community matters more than ever.
