Tears were streaming down my face as I took my shoes off at Airport Security.
I was about to hop on the big bird and leave my home in Auckland, New Zealand.
Leaving behind everything I had ever known.
My family.
My friends.
My work.
My faith community.
I was heading to London, a place I had never been before, into a life that had no guarantees.
I was shit scared.
Very sad to have just said goodbye to my aging parents.
As I cleared security and started retying my shoes 👞, I heard 3 words, as clearly as if the person next to me had spoken them…
“Never look back.”
It’s been almost 20 years, and those words have carried me through success and failure.
I’ve climbed mountains with those words written on my heart.
I’ve also walked through storms by holding them close.
You cannot achieve greatness by holding onto to the past.
You can have a great adventure if you are carrying the baggage of yesterday.
You must travel light.
You must live with levity if you are to embrace uncertainty.
It has been my entrepreneurial creed.
At times, I have forgotten it, and when I have, heaviness always finds me.
Today, I am remembering it again. I hope that you will, too.
Never look back.
The past is gone, and this present moment is all you have.
Embrace the adventure.
